    Side Effects & Safety

    In a three-month double-blind trial in 44 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type, treatment was interrupted because of confusion in four aniracetam patients and one placebo patient (PMID: 3103163). A 1994 review of the trial program described aniracetam as well tolerated and noted that it did not appear to raise liver enzyme levels, while cautioning that incidence rates for adverse effects were not yet available (PMID: 8199398). A pharmacokinetic study in six elderly women with cerebrovascular disease found much higher metabolite exposure but no observed clinical side effects (PMID: 9062694).
