# Peptides for Hair Growth

GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu, PTD-DBM, thymulin and follistatin-344, measured against minoxidil

no dosing on this page human data on 4 of 6 the minoxidil trials measured at 12, 24 and 48 weeks, and the five-year follow-up saw regrowth peak near one year; the GHK-Cu eyebrow study ran 12 weeks; nothing else on this bench has a human hair timeline for the compound itself advanced

## 01 Overview

GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu, PTD-DBM, thymulin and follistatin-344 are research peptides sold for hair loss, set beside topical minoxidil, an FDA-approved hair drug with decades of randomized trials. minoxidil is the yardstick for what a human evidence base looks like. BodyHackGuide gives no amount, schedule or route for any compound on the hair growth bench.

### 02 Read this first

every peptide on this page is research use only. BHG Labs sells GHK-Cu as a lyophilized research vial; a certificate, where BHG Labs posts one on its certificates page (bhglabs.co/coa), covers a sample from one lot, not what GHK-Cu does on a scalp, and no scalp trial of GHK-Cu itself has been published. three hard stops. a copper metabolism disorder such as Wilson disease runs against a copper peptide by mechanism, and nobody has studied one in that setting. anyone in a tested sport should know follistatin sits under section S4 of the WADA list. and topical minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs, where the most common route for cats was contact with an owner's treated skin, pillowcase or a spill, and for dogs it was getting into the product, for example from the trash. nothing here is an amount, a schedule or a route.

01 Minoxidilhuman trials

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/minoxidil)

the approved comparison, and the only compound on this bench with an FDA approval for hair (finasteride, the other FDA-approved drug for pattern hair loss, is not on the bench). a potassium-channel opener and a prodrug: follicular sulfotransferase converts it to minoxidil sulfate, which is the form that acts on the follicle. the 2% topical solution was approved on 17 August 1988 and sells over the counter.

evidence: two 48-week randomized placebo-controlled trials, 393 men and 381 women. in the men's trial, 5% produced about 45 percent more non-vellus hair than 2% at week 48, with an earlier response. a 24-week trial in 113 women found 5% foam non-inferior to 2% solution, with less itching and flaking. a 2017 systematic review ran five separate meta-analyses and found low-level laser light, 5% minoxidil, 2% minoxidil and finasteride all better than placebo in men, and 2% minoxidil better than placebo in women. a 31-man follow-up out to 4.5 and 5 years saw regrowth peak near one year and then decline slowly, while staying above baseline.

watch for: oral minoxidil carries different risks from the topical form. a 2024 randomized trial of oral minoxidil (90 enrolled, 68 completed) was not superior to topical 5% at 24 weeks, and 49 percent of the oral group grew hair where they did not want it. in a 1404-patient retrospective cohort the most frequent effect was hypertrichosis (15.1 percent), each systemic effect stayed under 2 percent, and nothing life-threatening appeared; hypertrichosis led 14 patients to stop treatment and systemic effects led 29 to stop. topical minoxidil poisons cats and dogs: across 211 reported pet exposures, most animals that developed signs had moderate or major illness, and 8 of 62 affected cats died.

02 GHK-Cusmall human trials, none on the scalp

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/ghk-cu)

the copper tripeptide, glycyl-histidyl-lysine bound to copper(II). much of the hair story is borrowed from skin work: in fibroblast culture it raises collagen synthesis, in rat wound chambers it shifts decorin and glycosaminoglycan output, and in fibroblasts it moves MMP-2 together with the metalloproteinase inhibitors.

evidence: no randomized trial of GHK-Cu itself on scalp hair has been published. copper tripeptide-1 has reached the scalp only inside mixtures, in uncontrolled clinic series: 1000 patients injected with a growth-factor formulation that also held thymosin beta-4, and 18,918 men on a regimen that also included minoxidil and finasteride. the closest controlled scalp study used a different molecule: a 45-man, six-month randomized double-blind study of a conjugate of 5-aminolevulinic acid and copper-free GHK, where hair count rose in both active arms and hair length and thickness did not separate from placebo. a 2026 review reports an 18-participant randomized, vehicle-controlled split-face study in which a 2 percent GHK-Cu serum improved eyebrow hair count and diameter over 12 weeks; that study is not separately indexed in PubMed, and the review calls the whole human record small and chemically undercharacterized. the animal work behind the hair claim is mostly old. a 1991 two-page report from ProCyte, the company developing copper peptides, describes hair follicle-stimulating properties of peptide copper complexes in C3H mice (PubMed carries no abstract), and a copper-binding peptide enlarged follicles on fuzzy rat back skin about as much as topical minoxidil did. the newer exception is a 2023 mouse study in which a microemulsion carrying GHK-Cu promoted hair growth.

watch for: GHK-Cu's controlled human trials are mostly wound and cosmetic trials, and they do not agree. topical gel beat vehicle on diabetic neuropathic ulcers. a 0.4 percent cream did not beat placebo on venous stasis ulcers in 86 evaluable patients, where silver sulfadiazine did. after CO2 laser resurfacing, both arms of a 13-completer trial improved, and the GHK-Cu products did not beat the regimen without them on wrinkles or redness by objective measures. copper does cross human skin in quantity ex vivo, about 136 mcg per square centimeter over 48 hours from a 0.68 percent solution, so treating a copper peptide as something that stays on the surface is not supported. FDA lists injectable GHK-Cu among nominated-but-withdrawn bulk substances, with an immunogenicity concern and limited human data.

03 AHK-Cuorgan culture and cell work only

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/ahk-cu)

the alanine analog of GHK-Cu: alanyl-histidyl-lysine bound to copper, one residue different.

evidence: one 2007 study. AHK-Cu at picomolar to nanomolar concentrations (10^-12 to 10^-9 M) lengthened human hair follicles in organ culture and raised proliferation of cultured dermal papilla cells. in the same paper the fall in apoptotic papilla cells did not reach statistical significance; what moved was the Bcl-2 to Bax ratio and the cleaved forms of caspase-3 and PARP. nothing in people, by any route.

watch for: no human trial of AHK-Cu exists. the claim that it stimulates follicles more strongly than GHK-Cu has no head-to-head study behind it in the indexed literature. it carries the same copper questions as GHK-Cu with a fraction of the work behind them.

04 PTD-DBManimal and cell only

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/ptd-dbm)

a competitor peptide: a protein transduction domain fused to a Dishevelled-binding motif, built to stop the CXXC5 protein from gripping Dishevelled, which releases Wnt and beta-catenin signaling inside the follicle.

evidence: one laboratory's program, entirely preclinical. the 2015 paper that introduced the peptide showed CXXC5 acting as a brake on cutaneous wound healing in mice and reported faster healing when valproic acid was added to it. the 2017 hair paper found CXXC5 raised in miniaturized follicles and arrector pili muscle from balding human scalp, accelerated regrowth in Cxxc5 knockout mice, and faster regrowth plus wound-induced follicle neogenesis in mice treated with the peptide. a 2023 paper from the same group placed prostaglandin D2 and DHT upstream of CXXC5: the peptide reversed prostaglandin D2's suppression of hair regrowth and wound-induced follicle neogenesis in mice, but against DHT only KY19382, the group's own small molecule that blocks CXXC5 and GSK-3beta together, fully restored beta-catenin and whisker elongation.

watch for: no human trial, and no study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov under this name. all three PTD-DBM papers come from one Yonsei University group, and its senior author lists company affiliations on the hair papers (CK Biotechnology in 2017, CK Regeon in 2023). the pathway itself is not a free lever: mice expressing a stabilized beta-catenin in skin grew new follicles and also grew two kinds of follicle tumor.

05 Thymulinone small human trial, none on hair

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/thymulin)

a nonapeptide made by thymic epithelial cells whose biological activity depends on a zinc ion held in the molecule. in metal-binding work, copper is one of the ions that competes with zinc for that site, and binding falls away below about pH 6.

evidence: the only indexed paper that puts thymulin next to human hair follicles is a 2012 research letter (pages 1516 to 1519) in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology on thymic peptides in scalp follicle organ culture. PubMed carries no abstract for it and the full text sits behind a paywall, so what it measured for thymulin is something i could not read and will not summarize second hand. the German clinic reports from 1986 and 1990 on thymus preparations for hair loss used a topical thymus gland extract, not thymulin; the 1990 report describes improvement in 73 percent of cases, and PubMed indexes it as a controlled trial although its abstract describes no control arm. outside hair, synthetic thymulin (then called serum thymic factor) did no better than placebo in a 1989 double-blind trial in 40 people with multiple sclerosis, and a 1982 report describes three immunodeficient children treated with it.

watch for: no trial of thymulin on hair in people. the zinc dependence matters on this particular bench: putting a copper peptide and a zinc-dependent peptide into the same routine is an interaction that no study has examined in either direction.

06 Follistatin-344small human trials, mixture and gene therapy only

the guide (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/compound/follistatin-344)

the myostatin and activin binder. the 344 in the name is a precursor length, not the circulating protein: the human gene produces a 344-residue and a 317-residue precursor through alternative splicing of the same message.

evidence: for hair, the data is mouse data. follistatin turned up as an extra-follicular signal that propagates hair waves in aging mice and declines with age, and as a gene downstream of OVOL1 in follicle neogenesis. the one human hair study that delivered follistatin did not test it alone: it was a 26-subject phase 1 of a cell-derived mixture containing Wnt proteins, follistatin, KGF and VEGF, injected once into the scalp, which reported hair thickness and density gains at 12 weeks and a hair-count gain at one year. the only human follistatin program with published results is gene therapy, not an injected protein: an AAV1 vector carrying FS344 delivered into the quadriceps of six Becker muscular dystrophy patients.

watch for: WADA prohibits follistatin under section S4 of its list, and a doping control laboratory that tested 17 black market products labeled follistatin 344 found follistatin in nine of them, all of those His-tagged and heavily oligomerized, with growth-promoting peptides such as MGF and GHRP-2 turning up in some of the rest. follistatin knockout mice die within hours of birth with taut shiny skin and abnormal whiskers, and mice engineered to overexpress it had smaller testes, irregular fur and, in some lines, infertility. follistatin-like 1 is a different protein: in dermal papilla cells from men with pattern hair loss, more of it tracked with worse cell behavior, not better.

### 05 Why these together

these five peptides are sold for one goal through four different levers: copper delivery and matrix signaling for GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu, releasing a Wnt brake for PTD-DBM, a zinc-dependent thymic signal for thymulin, and binding myostatin and activin for follistatin-344. minoxidil is on the page for contrast, not as a partner. no controlled study has tested any two of these together. the one report pairing two of them in people is an uncontrolled clinic series of 18,918 men given oral and topical minoxidil plus scalp injections of a mixture that included copper tripeptide, with finasteride on top, a design that cannot credit anything to the copper peptide. in animals the only pairing is PTD-DBM with valproic acid in mice.

### 06 Overlap

GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu are the clearest duplication: two copper tripeptides differing by one residue, both delivering copper, with no study of the pair. PTD-DBM and follistatin-344 both touch the TGF-beta and Wnt side of follicle cycling, from opposite ends, and both hair literatures are mouse work. minoxidil's link to that pathway is disputed: a 2011 study found it activates beta-catenin in human dermal papilla cells and a 2021 review lists it as a Wnt inducer, while the 2023 CXXC5 paper states it does not affect Wnt signaling.

### 07 Conflicts

two copper peptides at once (GHK-Cu with AHK-Cu): duplication with no data. copper peptides with meaningful supplemental zinc: zinc and copper compete for gut absorption, which is the basis of zinc therapy in Wilson disease, and whether that matters for a peptide applied to skin is untested. Wilson disease or any copper metabolism disorder: mechanism-based avoidance, no study. thymulin with a copper peptide: copper competes for the zinc site that thymulin needs, which nobody has tested in use. anything that raises Wnt signaling in a person with a history of skin tumors: the stabilized beta-catenin mouse grew follicles and tumors from the same change. oral minoxidil with cardiovascular disease or a pericardial problem: a review of low-dose oral use puts serious events as rare and often tied to compounding errors, and one pharmacovigilance analysis still finds pericardial effusion disproportionately reported for oral versus topical, so the question is open. follistatin in tested sport: prohibited. cats and dogs in a household where topical minoxidil is used.

### 08 What the evidence actually is

minoxidil: two 48-week placebo-controlled trials of several hundred people each, a five-year follow-up, a 1404-patient safety cohort, a null head-to-head against oral at 24 weeks, and a 2017 meta-analysis. GHK-Cu: three topical wound and cosmetic trials that split positive, null and null, a vehicle-controlled eyebrow study known only through a review, two uncontrolled scalp series of mixtures, one 45-man trial of a different GHK molecule, and rodent follicle work. AHK-Cu: one human organ-culture paper. PTD-DBM: three papers from one group, mice and cells. thymulin: one research letter with no indexed abstract, clinic reports that used a thymus extract, and one null 40-person trial outside hair. follistatin-344: mouse hair-cycle work, one 26-subject trial of a multi-factor mixture, and a six-patient gene therapy study. no controlled study has tested any pairing from the hair growth bench in people.

### 09 What people report

the market promise is regrowth. minoxidil is the only name here with placebo-controlled scalp trials in people. GHK-Cu has one small vehicle-controlled eyebrow study known only through a review, AHK-Cu has one study in cultured human follicles, follistatin appears in one trial of a multi-factor mixture, and the rest of the hair evidence is mouse and cell work.
