2026 Safety Guide

# Resveratrol Side Effects

Complete Resveratrol safety profile: reported side effects from published research, contraindications, severity tiers, and how to minimize adverse reactions through proper dosing and vendor selection.

## Reported Resveratrol side effects

What human trials recorded Single oral doses of 0.5 to 5 g caused no serious adverse events in 40 healthy volunteers (PMID: 17548692). In 40 healthy volunteers who took 0.5, 1, 2.5 or 5 g a day for 29 days, resveratrol was described as safe, but the 2.5 and 5 g doses caused mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms (PMID: 20935227). A 2009 placebo-controlled study in 40 healthy adults that gave 25 to 150 mg six times a day for 13 doses found adverse events mild and similar with resveratrol and placebo (PMID: 19194969). In a 52-week phase 2 trial in 119 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease, with doses rising to 1,000 mg twice a day, the most common adverse events were nausea, diarrhea and weight loss, and brain volume loss on MRI was greater with resveratrol than with placebo (PMID: 26362286). In a 12-month trial of 75 mg twice a day in postmenopausal women, the four serious adverse events recorded were all in the placebo group (PMID: 32244933). The 142-person knee osteoarthritis trial recorded serious adverse events, none judged related to the study treatment, in 3 people on resveratrol and 2 on placebo (PMID: 39137167). Kidney failure in a myeloma trial In a phase 2 trial in 24 people with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, sponsored by Sirtris (then a GSK company), SRT501, a resveratrol product given as an oral suspension, was taken at 5 g a day, alone or with the cancer drug bortezomib. The posted results list serious adverse events in 12 of the 24, among them acute renal failure in 3, renal failure in 2 and renal impairment in 1, and 16 participants withdrew because of adverse events (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00920556). The trial was terminated, and its results were published as a letter (PMID: 23205612). Exercise training In 27 physically inactive men aged about 65 who did 8 weeks of high-intensity exercise training, the rise in maximal oxygen uptake was 45 percent greater with placebo than with 250 mg of trans-resveratrol a day, mean arterial pressure fell only with placebo, and resveratrol abolished the training gains in LDL cholesterol, the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio and triglycerides (PMID: 23878368). Drug-metabolizing enzymes In 42 healthy volunteers, 1 g of resveratrol a day for 4 weeks inhibited the phenotypic activity of the liver enzymes CYP3A4, CYP2D6 and CYP2C9 and induced CYP1A2 (PMID: 20716633). Pregnancy (animal data only) No human pregnancy data were found. In Japanese macaques fed a Western-style diet, resveratrol given throughout pregnancy raised fetal pancreatic islet capillary density above control levels, and the authors advised against resveratrol use in pregnancy until the long-term consequences are known (PMID: 24844258).

## When to continue, reduce, or stop Resveratrol

Mild: continue protocol

Transient mild symptoms (slight GI upset, minor injection-site reaction, brief fatigue) typically resolve within 3-7 days as physiology adjusts. Continue at current dose; monitor weekly.

Moderate: reduce dose

Persistent mild symptoms past two weeks, or new symptoms like sustained mood changes, sleep disruption, or appetite shifts. Reduce dose by 25-50% and reassess at the end of the next 2-week window.

Severe: discontinue + seek care

Any signal of allergic response (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty), unexplained chest discomfort, severe injection-site reaction with infection signs, or vision changes. Discontinue immediately and consult a licensed practitioner.

## Resveratrol contraindications

Medicines cleared by CYP3A4, CYP2D6 or CYP2C9 are a concern: one gram of resveratrol a day for 4 weeks inhibited these enzymes in healthy volunteers, and the study authors warned of possible adverse drug reactions or altered drug effects (PMID: 20716633). Kidney disease and multiple myeloma are reasons for caution, because kidney failure was recorded in several of the 24 myeloma patients given SRT501, a resveratrol product, at 5 g a day (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00920556). No human pregnancy data were found; in pregnant macaques, resveratrol changed fetal pancreatic islet blood vessel density, and the authors advised against use in pregnancy (PMID: 24844258). Resveratrol acted as an estrogen receptor agonist and stimulated growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells in laboratory studies (PMID: 9391166), so estrogen-sensitive conditions are a mechanism-based reason for caution. Exercise training in older adults is a concern: in older men, resveratrol blunted several cardiovascular gains from 8 weeks of training (PMID: 23878368).

## Why vendor quality drives Resveratrol side-effect frequency

Research-compound communities consistently report that adverse-event frequency tracks with source quality. Three reasons: (1) impurity profiles vary by lab (residual synthesis byproducts can trigger reactions); (2) mislabeled mass means actual dose can be 50-150% of stated dose; (3) reconstitution-grade water and capping methodology affect long-term storage stability. COA-verified vendors with published HPLC data minimize all three failure modes. Check a vendor's COA record and Trust Score before you buy.

## Resveratrol side effects FAQ

### What are the most common Resveratrol side effects?

What human trials recorded Single oral doses of 0.5 to 5 g caused no serious adverse events in 40 healthy volunteers (PMID: 17548692). In 40 healthy volunteers who took 0.5, 1, 2.5 or 5 g a day for 29 days, resveratrol was described as safe, but the 2.5 and 5 g doses caused mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms (PMID: 20935227). A 2009 placebo-controlled study in 40 healthy adults that gave 2

### Are there severe side effects to watch for with Resveratrol?

Severe reactions are rare in published research but can occur. Watch for: allergic-type symptoms (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty), unexplained chest discomfort, infection signs at injection sites, vision changes, or severe persistent mood/sleep disruption. Any of these warrants immediate discontinuation and consultation with a licensed practitioner. The Severity Tiers section above triages mild → moderate → severe response patterns.

### Does Resveratrol have contraindications?

Medicines cleared by CYP3A4, CYP2D6 or CYP2C9 are a concern: one gram of resveratrol a day for 4 weeks inhibited these enzymes in healthy volunteers, and the study authors warned of possible adverse drug reactions or altered drug effects (PMID: 20716633). Kidney disease and multiple myeloma are reasons for caution, because kidney failure was recorded in several of the 24 myeloma patients given SRT

### How can I minimize Resveratrol side effects?

Three biggest levers: (1) Start at the Beginner-tier dose for 2-3 weeks before escalating, which gives time to detect adverse signals at minimum effective dose. (2) Source from COA-verified vendors only: impurity profiles and mislabeled compounds drive a disproportionate share of reported side effects in research-compound communities. (3) Maintain adequate cycle off-time when applicable: receptor-saturating compounds benefit from 4-6 week breaks. The vendor section below lists the cheapest in-stock Resveratrol sources we track, each linked to its Trust Score (COA verification is 30% of the score).
