# Bacteriostatic Water vs a Finished Nasal Spray Base

Most research nasal sprays are a peptide mixed into bacteriostatic water. A finished spray base is a different product: a carrier built for the nose, a chitosan-based mucosal hold, filtration before pack-out, and a metered sprayer. Here is what separates the two, and what neither one proves.

Key Takeaway

_Last updated: September 2026, BodyHackGuide research desk_

If you have bought a research nasal spray in the last year, there is a good chance you bought a peptide mixed into bacteriostatic water. That is the default in this space. Somebody reconstitutes a vial, pours it into a plastic bottle, screws on a sprayer, and lists it.

It works, in the sense that liquid comes out. It is also the cheapest possible version of a nasal product, and the bottle rarely tells you that.

Here is the honest version of what separates a water mix from a finished spray base, and what neither one proves.

## What bacteriostatic water actually is

Sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol is there so the vial survives being punctured more than once without growing anything.

That is the whole job. Bacteriostatic water is a diluent, not a nasal carrier. It has no mucoadhesive polymer, no solubility system, nothing that helps the liquid stay where it lands. Sterile water is the same story minus the preservative, which is why a sterile water spray is a worse idea for anything you open repeatedly.

None of that makes bacteriostatic water bad. It is the right tool for reconstituting a vial. It was never designed to be a finished nasal product.

## What a finished spray base adds

A spray platform is a formulation plus the hardware that delivers it. Ours is built around:

- **Carrier balance for the nose.** A thin water mix runs off. A balanced carrier feels less harsh and behaves more predictably in a nasal format.
- **Chitosan-based mucosal hold.** Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide that sticks to mucosal surfaces. It is one of the most studied polymers in nasal delivery research, valued for exactly two properties: mucoadhesion and permeation enhancement (Mura 2022 (https://doi.org/10.3390/md20050335), Luppi 2010 (https://doi.org/10.1517/17425247.2010.495981), Kumar 2016 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2016.05.054), all via PubMed).
- **Solubility support**, so the finished liquid stays uniform instead of separating out of plain water.
- **Preservation support** in the finished liquid, not just whatever preservative came along with the water.
- **0.22 micron filtration before pack-out**, the same filter size used to sterile-filter solutions in a lab.
- **Lot tracking and production documentation** on every batch, so a COA ties to the bottle in your hand.
- **Premium glass with a custom 100 micron metered flip-top sprayer**, made in the USA in a veteran-owned operation.

## The sprayer matters more than people think

A metered sprayer delivers the same volume per actuation. A generic top does not, which means two sprays from a cheap bottle are not necessarily two of anything.

Glass also behaves better than thin plastic for a liquid you keep for weeks, and a flip-top is a great deal harder to set off in a bag than a bare pump.

This is the least glamorous part of the whole comparison and the part you notice every single time you use it.

## What none of this proves

Be careful with anyone, us included, who turns formulation features into outcome promises.

- A better carrier does not make a compound work.
- Nobody here is claiming a percentage of extra absorption for any product. The chitosan research above is about the polymer in nasal delivery generally, not a number measured on our bottles.
- Shelf life claims need real stability testing, not carrier logic.
- Everything on this page is research-use-only material. None of it is for human consumption.

## Four questions that tell you what you are buying

1. **What is the liquid?** If the answer is "bac water", you are buying a reconstituted vial in a spray bottle.
2. **Was it filtered after mixing, and at what size?**
3. **Is there a COA tied to this lot, and can you see it before you buy?**
4. **Is the sprayer metered?** If the listing does not say, assume it is not.

Any vendor should be able to answer all four in a sentence each.

## What we use

BHG Labs research atomizers (Semax, Selank, Adamax) are built on the finished platform described above rather than a water mix.

Compare it against anything else on the vendor scorecard (https://www.bodyhackguide.co/vendors/scorecard) before you order. If another vendor answers those four questions better, buy theirs.

## Frequently asked

No. It is a preserved diluent and it does that job well. It simply has no mucoadhesive polymer, no solubility system and no absorption support, because it was designed for reconstituting vials, not for finished nasal products.
